Lee Haney: “I heard plenty of doubts expressed in the media after the Olympia win in Chicago. People questioned whether I deserved to win the title- and that really upset me.
I’m either a popular champ or no champ at all. I don’t want to hear people saying, “He wasn’t at his best; they just handed him the title. I’m tired of looking at Lee Haney.” No way I’m going to sit back and accept being less than my best.
So I had some serious soul searching ahead of me. Should I come back for Number Eight, or should I retire with Seven. I asked my wife, Shirley, for her advice and she didn’t even hesitate: “You have to go for Number Eight; you’re too close to the record to stop now- don’t even think about it.”
