Ronnie Coleman comes to mind as one of three professional bodybuilders who were police officers, although there may have been more. There’s been a greater number of bodybuilders who have been probation officers but, at the moment, only Dave Johns comes to mind. Johns was the 1977 AAU Mr. America and 1978 NABBA Mr. Universe winner. Dave Johns died on July 26, 1986.
Three-time Mr. Olympia Sergio Oliva was a police officer in Chicago for more than 25 years. In 1986, Sergio survived being shot in the abdomen five times from a .38 special by his then-wife Arleen Garrett. On November 12, 2012 Sergio died in Chicago, Illinois from apparent kidney failure. Sergio Oliva was he second Mr. Olympia and first to pass away and Larry Scott, the first Mr. Olympia, was the second Mr. Olympia title holder to pass away.
IFBB World Pro Championships winner Ron Love became a policeman in 1972. He was shot in the leg in 1975 in the line of duty. His rehabilitation led to lifting weights and then bodybuilding. Less than 18 months after being shot, Love placed 9th at the Mr. Michigan Championships, his first contest. In 1982 he won the overall NPC Michigan Championships and went on to compete in over 80 bodybuilding competitions including the Mr. Olympia.
After Louisiana-born, eight-time Mr. Olympia Ronnie Coleman graduated with a BSc in accounting in 1984 he became a police officer in Arlington, Texas, serving from 1989 to 2000 and as reserve officer until 2003.
Common work-place drug tests are generally for recreational drugs like marijuana, cocaine, and opiates. It is unlikely that any of these bodybuilder cops were tested for steroids.
There is one more professional bodybuilder who was not a full time police officer but does have a law enforcement history. Check out these stats:
- In February 2006, Lou Ferrigno was sworn in as a Los Angeles County, California, reserve sheriff’s deputy.
- In November 2010, Lou Ferrigno was sworn in as a member of a Maricopa County, Arizona, volunteer sheriff posse.
- In June 2012, Lou Ferrigno was sworn in as a reserve deputy to the San Luis Obispo, California, Sheriff’s Department.
- In September 2013, Lou Ferrigno was sworn in as a special deputy to the Delaware County, Ohio, Sheriff’s Department.
What better bodybuilder to be in charge of the cops than Arnold Schwarzenegger who, as Governor of California, not only retained sovereign police power but was commander-in-chief of the California National Guard and the California State Military Reserve. Is there nothing Lou Ferrigno does that Arnold doesn’t one up him on? Actually, there is. Lou beat out Arnold for the Incredible Hulk role. Read about it here.
