The exterior of the original Gold’s Gym, featured in the book ‘Pumping Iron,’ underwent an alteration during the ownership of Bud Danitz and Dave Saxe when it was painted red, white, and blue. In their final year of ownership, they made the decision to open the gym to women. Among the two female members was Heide Sutter, a German woman also portrayed in the book. Her protective Great Dane always stood guard outside the small locker room when she showered in the gym’s only showers. Heide, is still a Gold’s Gym regular.
