Steve Reeves vs John Grimek

Steve Reeves

Steve Reeves original idol was John Grimek but, as he progressed, he started to look at classical art. To quote Reeves, “I looked at myself as an artist. I wanted to sculpt my physique. While I was originally very impressed with Grimek, he was massive but seemed to lack the quality I was looking for. When I competed against him, it was even more obvious. Grimek’s back was thick. His traps were very massive. Really thick lumbar and lower back. But he had no lats. No V-shape. I wanted to go beyond that and I did. This gives the body an aesthetic look. End quote. In the mid 1940s, Reeves became more inspired by Clarence Ross and Al Stephan, for their V shape.
