This photo was taken around 1973 in Hawaii. Arnold Schwarzenegger was friends with Hawaiian gym owner and bodybuilding contest promoter Mits Kawashima. In 1968, a promoter brought Schwarzenegger to Hawaii as a guest poser but left early, stranding Arnold. Mits and his wife Dot ended up taking Arnold out to dinner, loaning him their car, and letting him lift at their gym long enough until he could arrange getting back to California. The couple and Arnold ended up being friends and business partners, co-producing bodybuilding contests in Hawaii for around 30 years. Mits died in 2012 at the age of 93 in Hawaii. One of Hawaii’s bodybuilding pioneers, he opened one of Hawaii’s first gyms in 1948 and also worked with other legends including John Grimek, Larry Scott, and Sergio Oliva.
